FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the paid version and the free version?

In the paid version there is no limit on the number of measurements and training sessions.

How often do I need to take measurements?

We recommend that you measure your stress level three times a day: in the morning after waking up, in the afternoon before eating, and in the evening. Daily measurements will allow you to monitor the variation in your stress levels over the week and month. You can also measure your stress during important events. Measuring stress levels before or after such events will help you assess the health impact on your body.

How do I cancel the measurement and training session?

Simply go to the other menu.

How does StressCam measure the pulse?

The optical plethysmography method is used to measure the pulse. The light source is an LED flash. Light is reflected from the finger pads, and the movement of the arteries is captured by the camera lens. StressCam records the video, distinguishes the pulse signal, removes noise and smoothing.

What is the accuracy of the pulse measurement?

The measurement accuracy is comparable to the precision of a conventional optical heart rate monitor. If during the measurement the finger is stationary relative to the camera and the smartphone flash it can reach a precision of ± 1 beats per minute.

How does StressCam measure the stress level?

The calculation of stress is based on HRV technology. StressCam measures stress based on the evaluation of the predominantly sympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system. Our algorithms are based on geometrical methods. We have developed an algorithm for calculating stress level with a fixed scale from 1 to 10.

How is stress and heart rate variability related?

Stress is formed as a non-specific response of the body to external or internal stimuli, and it causes the mobilization or depletion of the body's resources. The heart is included in the regulation loop system, so the rhythm of the heart provides information on regulatory processes. Heart rate variability reflects the operation of the regulatory system of the body and its adaptive capacity.

Is it possible to draw a direct link between heart rate and stress levels?

No such relationship has been fully observed, although there is evidence of the heart response effect to emotional stimuli. This issue requires further study. We do not change the level of stress just by controlling an increase or decrease in the heart rate, do not change RMSS or similar statistical parameters due to the unsteadiness of the signal received, and we do not use the LF/HF ratio. In the unsteady conditions of pulse recording and motion aliasing spectral methods are not effective.

How is biological age measured?

Biological age is a parameter that reflects your health from the perspective of the state of your respiratory and cardiovascular system. It is a virtual evaluation of your state of health, which is not linked to your real age. The biological age is calculated by analyzing the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RCA) of the heart rate. The program incorporates a statistical model of the relation between depth of breathing and a person's age, which has a physiological basis.

What is the training mode?

Training in StressCam is performed in biofeedback mode. The biofeedback is a method is based on the ability of our body to affect the pulse of the heart by controlling breathing. During the training session, you can reduce stress, synchronizing your breathing with the training schedule in real-time. Depth of breathing parameters are used as feedback. Try to keep this parameter between "good" and "excellent." Breathe deeply and only from the belly (diaphragm). Proper training sessions reduce your heart rate, stress and age.

How often do you need to do biofeedback training sessions?

You should train every day in familiar surroundings: at home, in the office or out and about. You don’t need privacy, learn how to train in the presence of the background noise of the street or office.

Are there any contraindications for biofeedback sessions?

It is contraindicated in people with hypertension.

When training my stress increases and it is hard to breathe. Does this mean biofeedback is not working?

The transition from shallow breathing in the diaphragm may be accompanied by an increase in pressure, stress, a sense of lack of air when breathing. During the first training sessions do not try to immediately begin to breathe deeply at a slow pace. First choose for yourself a comfortable level by setting a rate of 8 to 10 breaths per minute. Get into the rhythm and during every training session try to slow it down. The ideal frequency is 6 times per minute.

How do I change my breathing rhythm when training?

You can change your breathing rate in "Training" by clicking on the option mark.

Can StressCam distinguish emotions based on stress?

No, but the effects of negative emotions can lead to increased stress levels. In our opinion it is not yet possible to credibly link HRV and the type of test emotions (positive or negative). Existing studies have given divergent results, depending on the context of the human perception of the event.

StressCam prompts the user to independently assess the link between his or her state with current stress levels, by commenting on each measurement. We believe that this will further motivate people to lead an active lifestyle, to change what they are doing and control their emotions.

How long does StressCam take to measure stress?

About 2 minutes. The calculation of stress is done in a floating window with the collation of validated pulse values. StressCam needs to accumulate 120 validated pulse values, which is the measurement, and you can obtain the level of your stress. If during the measurement you move your finger, the program will lose some of the value of the pulse and the measuring time may increase. The program will prompt you if it detects an error.

Why do I need to know my level of stress, if there is no advice on how to relax?

After each measurement, in the case of high stress or high biological age, StressCam suggests that you conduct biofeedback training. Our experiments have shown that when you see your current level of stress, you can take conscious actions to reduce it.

Do you need customized user settings to calculate stress?

No.

I now know my stress level. What should I do next? Immediately relax? Hardly possible!

To begin with you can stop the activity or interaction that is causing stress. Do not take any decisions, do not have any confrontations with loved ones. When you know that your condition is not optimal, it is easier to correct the behavior. The problem is that we can live a life of stress and not realize it.

Is it possible in this way to measure stress in a young child?

We have not carried out such studies. We do not recommend users to use StressCam for children or in particular make any conclusions from the results it gives.

Should I mention StressCam when I have to go to the doctor?

No, you need to make this decision yourself. StressCam is not a certified medical application. We do not recommend you use these results to make decisions when going to the doctor, diagnosing diseases, and for treatment.
